Your August 2026 SNAP Recertification Guide: How to Keep Your Food Benefits

If your SNAP (food stamp) benefits are set to expire in August, you need to renew them—a process called recertification.

Recertification is simply a periodic check-in required by law to make sure you still qualify and are receiving the correct benefit amount.

To prevent any interruption or delay in your monthly EBT deposits, you must complete your renewal before your August deadline.

Step-by-Step Renewal Process

  • Watch for Your Recertification Packet
    • Your state benefits office will mail you a Notice of Expiration and a renewal packet.
    • This packet contains your exact deadline, your recertification form, and instructions on whether to apply online, by mail, or in person.
  • Fill Out and Submit the Renewal Form
    • Complete the form carefully, detailing any changes to your household size, address, or income.
    • Submit it as early in August as possible to avoid last-minute delays.
  • Complete the Interview
    • Most households must complete a brief 10 to 30-minute phone interview with a caseworker.
    • Note: Depending on your state, your interview letter may give you a specific date and time, or it may instruct you to call the office to schedule one yourself.
  • Submit Required Proof (Verification Documents)
    • Your caseworker may ask for updated documents to verify your details, such as:
      • Identity: Driver’s license, state ID, or Social Security card.
      • Income: Recent pay stubs, pension statements, or proof of Social Security benefits.
      • Expenses: Rent or mortgage receipts, utility bills, or medical bills (especially for household members over 60 or with disabilities).
      • Zero Income: If you currently have no income, you can submit a signed self-declaration form or an official letter showing the end of employment/unemployment benefits.

Why Might Your Monthly Amount Change?

When your case is re-evaluated, your benefit amount could go up, go down, or stay the same:

  • It may increase if your income went down, your household grew, or your living/medical costs went up.
  • It may decrease if your household income increased, someone moved out, or your shelter costs went down.

Important Deadlines & Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I miss my interview?
  • What if I miss the August deadline?
    • Most states offer a 30-day grace period to submit your renewal. However, your September deposit will likely be delayed. If you wait longer than 30 days after your deadline, you may have to reapply for SNAP from scratch.
  • Are you 60 or older, or disabled?
    • If you live in a state participating in the Elderly Simplified Application Project (ESAP) and have no earned income, your recertification process may be simpler, require less paperwork, and potentially skip the interview requirement. Check with your local office to see if this applies to you.
